Basketball Campus
Year of construction: 2020 12,500 m²
Located on the banks of the Danube, the Basketball Campus in Neu-Ulm is defined by its bold, angular geometry and a “campus” philosophy that promotes transparency and movement. The design prioritizes the synergy between professional sports and the public, creating an open atmosphere that invites the city in while providing world-class privacy for elite athletes.
The facility spans over 10,000 m², housing three full-size basketball courts, a specialized fitness and rehabilitation center, a public restaurant, and a conference center.
Beyond the physical courts, the campus serves as the administrative headquarters for the club, integrating workspace and play-space to foster a seamless organizational culture.
The building acts as a bridge between the industrial heritage of the site and the natural landscape of the Danube, utilizing expansive glazing to offer views of the river and the Ulm Minster.
A striking combination of dark, textured surfaces and transparent glass sections creates a rhythmic play of light and shadow. The cantilevered elements provide a sense of dynamism, mimicking the explosive movement of the sport itself. The interior design follows a “short distances” logic. The transition from the public-facing lobby to the high-performance training zones is managed through thoughtful spatial layering, ensuring that the energy of the fan base and the focus of the players exist in a symbiotic balance.
Built with longevity in mind, the campus utilizes state-of-the-art climate control systems and durable materials capable of withstanding the high-traffic demands of a 24/7 sports operation.
Project completed while at Scherr und Klimke AG.
